The Disney Feature: Then and Now--Film and Television 122J—Summer Session #1 2015

Course requirements:

            1. Regular attendance

            2. Viewing of Disney features

            3. Midterm: a 1-page précis of the final paper: due July 1st.

            4. Final: A 10-15 page (double spaced) paper on one of the Disney features. 

Students who want to write about a related subject (the work of one animator, artistic styles, certain imagery, etc.) should speak with the Professor and/or TA no later than July 10.                                                         



Prerequisites: A desire to learn about the history of animation in general,    the Disney Studio in particular, and their effects on popular culture.



Texts: There is no required reading for the course, but students will be expected to watch films that are not shown in their entirety. The films may be rented from video stores, Netflicks, etc. In addition, the TA will have a list of reliable books on various aspects of Disney animation to aid in research.


Average cost per student: $25.-$50. for video rentals.

June 24:       From the Silly Symphonies to Snow White--an era of artistic                                       experiments and education that culminate in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first American animated feature.



June 29:       1940: Disney's annus mirabilis: Pinocchio and Fantasia.



July 1:           Dumbo and Bambi: The last of the "Big Five." One page précis of final paper due.



July 6:            The "Package Features" and Song of the South.           

July 8:            The Silver Age: Cinderella through 101 Dalmatians



July 13:          The Interregnum: From Sword in the Stone to The Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron.



July 15:          The Disney Renaissance: The Great Mouse Detective through The Lion King: an arc of artistic and financial success



July 20:          The Renassiance Fades: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dinosaur, Atlantis to The Princess and the Frog and Frozen.                       


July 22:          Disney and Pixar



July 27:          Guest speaker: Supervising Animator from Disney Studio. PAPERS DUE AT THE END OF CLASS.
